In June 2009 we reported that a Shell Nigeria insider had disclosed to us that senior colleagues had a commercial relationship with militant leaders of gangs carrying out attacks on Shell employees, pipelines and installations. We established that the source was authentic. Indeed, to our surprise we discovered that The Financial Times had already confirmed the basics of our source’s allegations (see “Shell gives Nigerian work to Militant companies”). There were two possible interpretations. The first being that Shell entered into the murky dealings against the backdrop of a very difficult situation and with the worthy objective of keeping the oil flowing, believing this would be in the best overall interests of Nigeria and Shell stakeholders, including Shell Nigeria employees. The less attractive possibility is that there is much more money to be made by Shell on a global basis by stemming oil flow from Nigeria than in keeping it flowing. Production cuts due to militant attacks take place with alarming frequency. It only takes a small crimp in the oil pipeline applied on a regular basis to drive up the global oil price and keep it at a high level, thereby generating billions of extra dollars in annual profits. The same subject – Shell getting into bed with the militants – has been covered in a document just released by Friends of the Earth Netherlands From page 13 of “Royal Dutch Shell and its sustainability troubles” – Background report to the Erratum of Shell’s Annual Report 2010 The report is made on behalf of Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands) Author: Albert ten Kate: May 2011. Co-opting militants In 2006, it became clear that some of the militant leaders linked to the attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta earn tens of thousands of dollars from contracts with Shell. Leaders of the Federated Niger Delta Ijaw Communities (FNDIC), involved with violent activities in Delta State in 2003, later ran contracting companies working with the oil majors. The payments included “incident free” bonuses. Officials told the Financial Times that subcontracting work to local strongmen is one method some oil companies have used to buy off militants threatening attacks on oil facilities in the Delta.61 In September 2008, the Shell Executive Vice President (EVP) for Shell Companies in Africa, Ms. Ann Pickard, said that Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi lacked the connections among Rivers State militant leaders to successfully co-opt them as the governors in Delta and Bayelsa states have done with militants in their states.62 Co-opting militants seems to be one of the tactics to (temporary) reduce conflict. However, it can also be seen as a measure that serves conflict and corruption. THE COMPLETE 73 PAGE REPORT (with reference sources) Wednesday, February 16

For over a decade we have been drawing attention to the gap between Shell’s globally advertised General Business Principles compared with its track record of securities fraud, IP theft, price fixing cartels, fictitious trades, horrific pollution, evasion of UN sanctions, embedding spies in the Nigerian government, and involvement in torture, murder and human rights abuses. Simply put, the oil giants evil deeds to not match the fine words in its much proclaimed ethical code, which is clearly designed to fool the public and investors. The UK’s largest estate agency (real estate) and lettings network, Countrywide plc, with 46 well known high street brands, also claims to operate on an ethical basis. “We are regulated by the Ombudsman for Estate Agents and are therefore required to adhere to the code of practice. Our service standards are closely and regularly monitored. We always and only act in our clients best interests, giving you confidence and peace of mind that we will act with integrity and professionalism.” Estate agents have a toxic reputation on a par with second hand car dealers, so many people may feel that it would be safer to deal with a major chain, owned by a public company. Selling a house is a major event and it helps if you can trust the estate agency acting for you. Unfortunately, like Shell, the claims of ethical trading by Carsons/Countrywide are a sham if the dire experience of my nephew, Richard Denton, is any guide. He has had the misfortune of being a client of Carson & Company Estate Agents, a subsidiary of Countrywide Plc. Some of their employees have turned out to be decidedly shady. Despite Carsons claims of offering “consistently higher standards of performance, a more efficient service, better advice and faster results…”, they acted in a grossly negligent manner resulting in a living nightmare for Richard, who was made homeless for over a year after acting on their advice. As a further consequence, he was embroiled in extended legal proceedings before successfully evicting the alleged prospective purchaser. It was not better advice, but disastrous advice, possibly motivated by personal gain on the part of a Carsons employee, who was supposed to be representing Richard, not the prospective purchaser. Although Carsons was only ever instructed to put the property up for sale, Richard was maneuvered by them into letting it to the prospective purchaser, supposedly on a very short term basis, using a disastrously flawed “Lettings Agreement” suggested, recommended, supplied and implemented by a Carsons employee, Christian Wicks, who has since admitted receiving a vintage bottle of champagne as a reward from a person now described by Carsons as a ‘con artist’. In October 2009, Carsons introduced a prospective purchaser who made an acceptable offer. Richard was later informed by Christian Wicks, that there was a delay in funds allegedly in transit to the purchaser, but that the purchaser still wanted Richard to vacate the property by 6 November 2009. Richard advised that he was not comfortable to continue on such terms. The following day, Richard received a telephone call from Christian suggesting that the lettings division of Carsons could draw up a tenancy agreement to protect him so that he would be safe to vacate and allow the purchaser to move in. Richard was however surprised when he arrived at Carsons office on the afternoon of Friday 6 November to sign the agreement (having vacated his home that day) to discover that the terms set out were scant, amounting to a few lines of text and that the date on the agreement was 9 November 2009. The whole agreement could have fitted on one page, but was spread over three, presumably to make it appear more substantial. Richard was assured by Christian that everything was in order and that he should take Christian’s advice and sign the agreement. Richard felt backed into a corner, but trusted that Carsons had the lettings expertise to safeguard his position, as they had claimed. Unfortunately his faith was misplaced. The provenance of the so called “Lettings Agreement” is obviously at the heart of this matter. Carsons/Countrywide has carried out two investigations. The first by Regional Director Russell Mitten attempted to distance Carsons/Countrywide from any connection or responsibility for the hopelessly flawed “Lettings Agreement”. Mitten stated in his letter dated 4 November 2010: “Mr XXXXX asked us to type up on plain paper an agreement between both parties for him to take possession of the property. This was not a Carsons letting Agreement and was totally nothing to do with Carsons Earley office.” For legal reasons I have removed the name of the person in question described by Mr Mitten in the same letter as a very good and effective ‘con artist’. Mr Russell referred to the letting agreement transaction as “illegal dealings”. Instead of accepting liability for its role in the “illegal dealings”, Carsons/Countrywide has tried to evade responsibility by engaging in a cover-up. Richard has just received the results of a second investigation, this time by Carsons/Countrywide Managing Director, Steve Annells. His letter dated 10 February is full of inaccuracies (and inconsistencies compared with the information set out in the first investigation). I will just deal with the key issue, the provenance of the “Lettings Agreement”. Contrary to the earlier assertion that the defective agreement had nothing to do with Carsons Earley office, there is no denial by Annells that it was printed on Carsons paper, by a Carsons employee, at Carsons Earley office. However, it is now claimed that a Carsons employee, John Munday, never mentioned by Mr Mitten, typed out the agreement dictated to him over the phone by my nephew. This is totally at variance with the explanation given by Russell Mitten in the first investigation. Richard has no legal, estate agency or property lettings expertise whatsoever and would not know where to start in drafting a Lettings Agreement, or indeed any other legal agreement. The claimed telephone conversation is a total invention. It never happened. In response to the cover-up contained in the Annells letter, Richard on 14 February 2011 made a Subject Access Request to Carsons/Countrywide under the Data Protection Act. Under UK law, Carsons/Countrywide must now supply him within a prescribed period, all information held by them in which his name appears or reference is made to him. This includes all correspondence, reports, emails, drafts, legal advice etc. Since false evidence has been manufactured, he has asked Carsons/Countrywide to notify all involved employees of criminal offenses under The Data Act relating to the withholding or destruction of any such information. People willing to manufacture false evidence are just as likely to destroy evidence. Correspondence relating to this matter can be viewed here I believe that many people who read the correspondence will share the conclusions and views I have expressed in this article. Further information will be published shortly. If I were Grenville Turner, the Group Chief Executive of Countrywide, I would intervene immediately to find out the truth about the provenance of the so called Lettings Agreement foisted on my nephew in very dubious circumstances. It is in the best interests of Countrywide Plc investors that the cover-up is exposed and stopped before more damage is done to the reputation of the Group. Gemma Stacey at Countrywide plc head office was notified about this case on 19 January, so the parent company had plenty of time to establish the facts and ensure the matter was dealt with properly. When we first approached Shell senior management getting on to 20 years ago, they resorted to a cover-up, which led to our determined campaign against the company involving 6 high court actions, including two for libel, plus a county court action and proceedings by Shell through the World Intellectual Property Organisation. Shell has never won a single case and has been engulfed in negative publicity throughout this period. Carsons/Countrywide has set out on the same cover-up path. I invite Carsons/Countrywide plc to issue defamation proceedings against me. Indeed, I challenge the company to do so. If Mr John Munday has made the claim attributed to him, let’s see if he is prepared to commit perjury in a sworn witness statement and repeat that perjury under oath in the witness box, where his evidence will be subjected to cross examination. Does he really want to run the risk of potential imprisonment if he is part of a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, designed to evade responsibility for the financial consequences for the “terrible ordeal” suffered by my nephew (the unsolicited apt description given by Russell Mitten). His “terrible ordeal” arose from the gross negligence and/or reckless incompetence of Carsons/Countrywide plc employees. The suggestions made are mainly of two kinds-first, that Sir Henri Deterding and the great organization of which he is the head have, in the past, looked to Germany rather than to Great Britain as their home; and, secondly, that the Turkish Petroleum Company was a mysterious organization in which we and our friends sheltered ourselves behind German intrigue. These suggestions, of course, are utterly false. more »

THE TIMES 21 MARCH 1925
Royal Dutch Petroleum Company. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) ROYAL DUTCH PETROLEUM COMPANY. STATEMENT BY SIR HENRI DETERDING. THE HAGUE. MARCH 20. Sir Henri Deterding spoke at a banquet in Amsterdam last night where he was the guest of the industrial Club. He said the Royal Dutch Petroleum company (of which Sir Henri is general managing director) had not come more under British influence as had been suggested in certain quarters. Out of orders amounting to 28 million florins recently given out by his company, 22 million florins worth were placed. in Holland, where the work could be done best and cheapest. Speaking of the future of industry, with particular reference to the Dutch East Indies, Sir Henry Deterding said that Holland must continue to supply capital and men for the Indies. The need in the Indies was for good men who dared to take a responsibility. The people were not ready for self-government. Holland must learn to know the country better. He suggested that for three years, three groups each consisting of 12 teachers and 24 boys should be sent from Holland to learn more about the Indies. Sir Henry offered personally to pay half the expense of this scheme. He said it was necessary to send out bright young men who at an early age could make a start with practical work. Sir Henry Deterding's offer was gratefully accepted.

The Times: Sir H. Deterding On Rumours
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT AMSTERDAM, APRIL 22 Dealing with yesterday's heavy falling Royal Dutch shares, Sir Henri Deterding, according to a London dispatch to the Telegraaf, declared that the rumours that he had given a big loan to Kreuger with money acquired by pledging shares of the Royal Dutch and Shell were, completely unfounded. These rumours, Sir Henri said, formed part of a "bear" attack from Moscow. This movement against the Royal Dutch. was conducted from Paris, and was financially supported from Moscow.. Those who spread the rumours knew that they were complete lies. I am fully informed," Sir Henri added, " about the source of these rumours in Paris.. When the accounts of the Royal Dutch and, Shell are published they, will make a good impression." This statement had a reassuring' effect on to-day's Bourse. Yesterday, after official quotations, Royal Dutch dropped to about' 16, but to-day the tendency was firmer and they closed about 105. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange Committee has entered into communication with foreign .committees dealing with the protection the interests of holders of Kreuger securities. SIR H. The Times: German Dye Trust
From Our Frankfurt Correspondent Final recommendations by allied experts appointed to regroup the vast and diversified I.G. Farben complex have now been prepared for the High Commission, and anxious German shareholders whose holdings have been frozen since the war hope that a final decision will be announced soon. The recommendations are that the greater parts of the three large groups-one in the Ruhr,, one in the Frankfurt area, and one at Ludwigshafen, in the French zone-which formed the basis of the first chemical merger in 1925 should again operate independently, and that from the remaining Farben interests in west Germany about six minor com- panies should be formed. On at least. two points British and American officials i have failed to agree and the decision now rests with the High Commissioners. The full description of the Farben organization reads: " Community of Interests of the Dyestuffs Industry Share Company," and it was indeed a community of interests, perhaps the most diversified Europe has known. In 1939 it was by far the largest business organization in Ger- many, and it stiU represents to-day the most important German industrial activi-, ties after the manufacture of iron and steel and the mining of coal. Its products touch l the ordinary citizen closely and give con- stant promise of new articles for use in the home. A random list of Farben productsl would include dyestuffs for textiles andI for many other materials; pharma-| ceuticals such as aspirin and other familiar l names; nitrogen compounds, includingl fertilizers; films and other photographic supplies; plastics; synthetic rubber; syn- 1 thetic fuels, including petrol and oil; arti- I ficial silk and fibies ; insecticides; sera and! vaccines; light metals; synthetic gems and perfumes; and compressed gases. Rubber and fuels have been prohibited by the allies, but these prohibitions are not likely l to last much longer. COMPANIES ABROAD In 1925 there were eight large chemical concerns in Germany, including the Bayer group, centred on Leverkusen, in the Ruhr; the Farbwerke, centred on Hoechst, outside Frankfurt; the Badischel Anilin- and Soda-Fabrik, centred on Ludwigshafen; the Agfa (Aktiengesell schaft fur Anilinfabrikation) film i and photography company in Berlin; and others. These had built up their l names since the 1860s, but to eliminatel competition and reduce costs a merger was I decided upon. A managing board of the i new corporation was formed, and, with its roots in west Germany, rapidly extended its interests. Up to 1939 it acquired new] properties in east Germany, and alsol formed' a vast number of companies abroad, so that out of 890 companies about half-though by no means half of the capital-were outside Germany During the war Farben expanded into Poland and France, and when the war ended 56 per cent. of the Farben assets were in territory occupied by the Russians. These companies became a total loss. to German shareholders, either because they had been destroyed or because they were% taken as reparations or made into Soviet or east German agencies. The shareholders, most of whom are in west Germany, use the considerable reduction already sustained by the Farben empire as a further argu- ment against " atomization " of their surviving interests. EMPHASIS ON EXPORTS In 1944 therefore I.G. Farben extended from Paris to Poland, enjoyed a gross annual sale of between 2,500m. and 3,000m. Reichsmarks, declared an annual dividend of 6 per cent (the maximum allowed by the Nazis) and had fixed assets of about 2,O00m. Reichsmarks. The cor- poration concentrated largely on exports, and in the 1930s found markets all over the world, but it did not, the shareholders maintain, share proportionately in the internal boom based on German rearma- ment. In 1938 its share of total German exports of all kinds stood at 8.6 per cent., and of chemical exports alone at 57 per cent. It claimed then nearly one-fifth of the world's chemical exports. By the end of the war it employed nearly 200,000 people, a figure, it must be assumed, which does not include the slave labour used at two places. Use of slave labour was one of the only two charges sustained against some of the Farben directors when they were brought into court at Nuremberg. The indictment had named waging war, mass extermina- tion, plunder and spoliation, and use of slave labour. Five men out of 23 were convicted because this labour was used at a rubber factory at Auschwitz and at a coal mine in Silesia which supplied this factory, and nine men were convicted of spoliation in Poland, Norway, and France. None of the sentences exceeded eight years' imprisonment, and through good conduct reductions all the men sentenced are now free. The allies' first move in 1945 was to appoint a control officer in each of the four zones to administer Farben properties, and in the western zones the officers are still carrying out this task, the three together forming a tripartite control office with headquarters in Frankfurt. These officials were appointed under Control Council law No. 9, which also ordered that each Far- ben unit should be independent and that all trading in shares should cease. The Germans have complained justifiably that a similar edict was not issued in the case of shares in heavy industries, and the only reason for the distinctiofl which suggests itself is that the heavy hand of the Rus- sians did not fall on iron and steel affairs as it did on I.G. Farben. As time passed the Russians went their own way and disposed of assets in their zone without consulting the other Powers. In the western zones the administration of Farben properties did not correspond on all points. The French left the group at Liudwigshafen more or less intact; the British allowed some latitude in maintain- ing what the Germrans call natural econo- mic entities " and in leaving practical management to the Germans; the Anieri- cans wished to separate all the plants down to the smallest. The difference between the British and American approach explains the alternative policies now facing the High Commission. ALLEED POWERS Since the Federal Government was formed the allies have continued to reserve control over decartelization, and full authority over Farben is now invested in them through law No. 35, dated last August, which echoed Control Council law No. 9. It had a sumnary sound at this stage of developments in Germany, in that it annulled all the rights of former boards of Farben companies, and gave the High Comjmission power to ktransfer or dispose of assets, reorganize companies, and cancel existing contracts. The Ger- mans responded sbarply with the criticisms that there was no guarantee that new com- panies would be established able to face world competition; that no time limit was set to allied control; and that about 300,000 shareholders would continue to depend on allied good wilL The High Commission then gave the assurance that the intention was to form economically sound and independent companies, and to distribute the securities in those companies among present shareholders. The Germans have not opposed the prin- ciple of deconcentration, but have objected to some separation plans, and have not agreed among themselves in all cases. They agree that the larger units should now stand separately, but the shareholders would prefer to see the fate of the smaller units left in abeyance. The essential difference between British and American views has arisen from the American objective-even though this has now been somewhat modified-to break the complex into as small parts as possible and the British preference for allowing most of the Bayer group in the British zone to continue as an entity. The fac- tories at Ludwigshafen and Oppau, in the French zone, have attracted comparatively little notice, except when the disastrous explosion took place at Ludwigshafen in 1948. No one has seriously doubted that they should remain intact, and the French therefore have not been ts concerned in the controversy as the other two allies. Their vote, however, will be important in the High Commission. CHIEF ISSUES When it was seen that the control officers could not agree on fundamental principles British, American, and French experts were called in to advise on the future com- position of the companies. Their joint compromise report has met with objec- tions from the west German G3vernment and from British officials, on two major points and on one or two minor ones. The chief issues centre on recommendations that an Agfa plant for making photo- graphic films and paper inside the Lever- kusen group should be detached and joined to an Agfa camera factory in Munich; and that synthetic fibre plants at Dormagen, in the Leverkuseu group, at Rottweil, in the French zone, and at Bobingen, near Augsburg, in the American zone, should be joined together. The Government is against this fusiop of the fibre plants and estimates it woil1d cost 30m. marks. Its objection has British support. Similarly, it is argued that it would be unnecessary to sever the film plant from Leverkusen, where it has been developed. - The nine principal units proposed by the experts are: the three groups at Lever- kusen, Hoechst, and Ludwigshafen; the synthetic fibre group; the Agfa combina- tion; the Casella factory; the Titan plant at Leverkusen which manufactures the basis for paint and is under half American and half German ownership; the chemical works at Hitlls, in the British zone, which made synthetic rubber among other, pro- ducts; and the chlorine and plastics plant at Rheinfelden, in the French zone. Recommendations are also made on four other plants, among them one at Duisburg, in the Ruhr, which is dominant in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. A question also to be settled by the High Commission, is who is to choose the new boards and how far pre- vious managers are to be allowed to con- tinue in office. The British tendency has been to rely on men already doing the job, while the Americans have sought to make a clean sweep. Bevond this again is the prospect, amounting almost to a certainty, that voices will be heard demanding that the new principle of co-determination for labour proposed-but not yet finally accepted-for the iron and steel industries should also apply in the chemical industry. Finally, when all has been settled, it is possible that the validity of changes of ownership directed by Occupation Powers and not by shareholders will be challenged in the international court. Such a chal- lenge might undo much that has been done in the past six years, but with so many more rivers to cross closer at hand this one may be left until it is reached. THE TIMES War Record Of I.G. Farben From Our Special Correspondent in the United States Zone With the arraignment before an American military tribunal of Germany's vast chemical combine, I.G. Farben Industrie (Dye Trust), the most powerful industrialists of the Third Reich now step into the place at Nuremberg occupied a year ago by her chief political and military leaders. A group of 24 directors and executive officials were served on Saturday with a 20,000-word indictment charging them with preparing and waging wars of aggression and with a formidable list of specific crimes, including the murderous consequences of Nazi slave labour, that arose from them. The issue, in sum, is to determine the guilt of the industrialist in maktng aggressive war, already judged by N!luremberg to be the " supreme inter- national crime." The far-reaching conten- tion of General Telford Taylor, chief of counsel for the United States, is that with- out the armament makers Hitler and his generals could not have gone to war. Proceedings were recently begun in Nuremberg, the city of Nazi triumph and disaster, against Friedrich Flick, the little known but extremely influential steel magnate, and charges are to be brought in due course against the house of Krutp. The " Farben " trial, which may not open until July, is second in its significance only to the international trial mainly because of the intricate arrangements by which the combine participated in no fewer than 500 industrial undertakings outside Germanv, apart from its foreign manufacturing plants and holding companies. Judging from the indictment, these international ramifications, wnich for a long time in- spired cynical doubts about a trial ever being held, will be closely examined in the light of a massive accumulation of docu- mentary evidence. ECONOMIC FIFTH COLUMN Industrial undertakings abroad are set forth as the dupes of the Farben combine, which as late as 1942 still controlled more than 90 per cent. of synthetic rubber pro- duction throughout the world. Working hand in glove with Nazi foreign policy, its international affiliations and contracts, the indictment asserts, ran into thousands, including cartel agreements with major concerns in America, Britain, France, Norway, Holland, Belgium, and Poland, which were used as an economic weapon in the preparation for war. From 1935 on, all cartel agreements were cleared by Farben through the military economic staff of the Wehzrnacht. Their deliberate purpose was to restrict industrial develop- ment and scientific research outside Germany, especially in countries which Hitler planned to attack. In the same way Farben's pre-war activities were designed to weaken the United States as an " arsenal of democracy" by retarding such strategic products as synthetic rubber, magnesium, synthetic nitrogen, tetrazene, and' sulpha drugs. It is related how a cartel arrangement among Farben, the Aluminum Company of America and the Dow Chemical Com- pany greatly restricted the production of magnesium in the United States and pro- hibited exports to Europe except to Germany and, in negligible amounts, to Great Britain. Thus, Britain and the rest of Europe became completely dependent upon Germany for magnesium for which Britain was in a desperate situation on the outbreak of war. When, early in 1941, the British Purchasing Mission tried to buy tetrazene primed ammunition in the United States the sale was prevented by a Icartel agreement between a sub'idiary of Dupont and a subsidiary of Farben. The indictment further describes how, by means of cartel agreements with the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Farben delayed the development and pro- duction of buna rubber in the United States until 1940, while at the same time making Germany independent of rubber imports. Farben deliberately evaded its obligations under the agreements, with the result that America entered the war with no adequate rubber supply and, cut off from supplies from the Far East, with no adequate programme for making synthetic rubber. " Only the most drastic steps prevented disaster." INTERNATIONAL TENTACLES Another aspect of Farben's inter- national activities was the laying in of stocks of critical war materials pending the full production of German synthetics. No other firm in Germany had the neces- sary international connexions or the foreign currency. In 1936, for example, the Standard Oil Company delivered S14,000,000 worth of petrol on an order for $20,000,000. In June, 1938, with the invasion of Czechoslovakia imminent, Germany was still deficient in tetra-ethyl lead, one of the main essentials of aviation petrol. On Goring's orders Farben arranged to " borrow" 500 tons from the Ethyl Export Corporation of the United States, misrepresenting the purpose of a 'Sloan" that was never returned. In the same way the Trust, at the request of the Reichsbank, used its international credit position to obtain loans of foreign cur- rency; when German needs of foreign exchange became desperate it sold its pro- ducts at less than cost. From all these international tentacles it was not a far step for the Trust's foreign agents to form the core of Nazi intrigue and espionage throughout the world. Its Berlin office, it is declared, was transformed into the economic intelli- gence arm of the Wehrmacht, preparing special reports and maps from which the Lufivafle often selected its targets, and its leading officials abroad were in many instances absorbed into the counter-intelli- gence branch of the High Cormmand. And as war loomed nearer Farben had its plans ready for protecting its foreign assets in the British Empire, France, and the United States by transferring them to neutral trustees. The international aspects of the Farben trial may be expected to throw a new and sometimes uneasy light on German pre- parations for war. We have, for instance, this illuminating statement from one of the. accused, Georg von Schnitzler, who directed Farben's sales and commercial activities:- " Even without being directly informed that the Government intended to wage war, it was impossible for officials of 1.G. or any other industrialists to believe that the enormous pro- duction of armaments and preparations for war, starting from the coming into power of Hitler, accelerated in 1936, and reaching un- believable proportions in 1938, could have any other meaning but that Hitler and the Nazi Government intended to wage war come what Long before the coming of Hitler, Farben was not only the largest industrial combine ever formed in Germany but one of the greatest in the world. By 1939, hitched to the Nazi star, it had more than doubled its size; book profits by 1942 had risen to 571,000,000 marks; and again there is the word of Schnitzler for affirm- ing that modem warfare would be unthinkable Without the achievements of the German chemical industry through the Four-Year Plan, under which Carl Krauch, chairman of Farben's supervisory board of directors and No. I defendant in the coming trial, had served with plenipotentiary powers as Goring's chemical expert. In the early days Farben saw in Hitler and his movement the possibility of extending its empire. The indictment relates how in November, 1932, two of its directors sought from Hitler support for the costly Farben hydrogenation process for producing synthetic petrol, which it had contemplated abandoning. Synthetic petrol fitted into Hitler's programme. STATE WITHIN THE STATE When Hitler asked the industrialists for aid before the elections of March, 1933, Farben headed the list of contributions with 400,000 Reichsmarks; by the end of the year the Government had guaranteed a large expansion of the Farben synthetic petrol plants, and discussions had begun on synthetic rubber research and the construction of a secret mag- nesium plant. On the basis of this collabora- tion the combine was soon concentrating its vast resources on the creation and equipnent of the German war machine, and a purely military liaison agency, the Vermittulungssvelle was set up in Berlin, one of whoge func- tions was to assure secrecy, particularly in respect of patents. By the end of 1936 Goring, cxplaining the Four-Year Plan, was telling the industrialists, including Farben, " We are already on the threshold of mobilization and we are already at war. Alt that is lacking is the shooting." For Albert Speer, the Dye Trust, often referred to as the " State within the State," had been raised to government status. The indictment precisely describes Farben's maJor contribution to German rearmament as the synthetic production of nitrates, oil, and rubber, without which Germany, having no natural resources, was incapable of preparing or waging aggressive war. Farben was the core of military mobilization not only by virtue of its own production but because all other German chemical companies and many other war industries were almost totally dependent upon its products. German tanks, artillery, and armoured vehicles rolled on Farben elec- tron metal wheels, were shod with Farben buna rubber, and propelled by Farben synthetic petrol. Nazi bomnbers were armoured with 'arben alurninium and magnesium alloys, carried death loads of Farben incendiary bombs and explosives, and were fuelled by Farben high-octane aviation petrol. With the unleashing of war Farben, it is alleged, entered upon a systematic programme of spoliation by scizing the chemical indus. tries of the overrun countries. But by the time France was defeated Farben's dreams of world conquest under its own New Order, a docu- ment of several thousand pages setting forth detailed schemes for the whole of Europe's chemical production, were rivalled only by Hitler's. Finally, the dread shadow of Himmler and the S.S. falls upon the war record of I.G. Farben. which is charged not only with a share of responsibility for the slave labour pro- 4ramme in drawing upon foreign workers for its factories but. by the construction on its own recommendation of a buna plant at Auschwitz, of direct complicity in the inhuman sufferings and murder of the concentration camps. Farben's conduct at Auschwitz, con- cludes the indictment, may best be described by a remark of Hitler: " What does it matter to us ? Look away if it makes you sick." WAR RECORD OF I.G.
