View Article  Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com: Chambers' chief hits out at Shell protesters
From the Irish Independent: He outlined the project and its potential impact in re-defining regional economies and said that the company was sorry about the jailing of five Rossport men last year, as was stated by the company earlier this year. In response, John Dunne, speaking on behalf of Chambers Ireland questioned why the Shell company should apologise for applying the law of the State.   more »
View Article  Irish Independent: Windfall profits tax unlikely as oil prices continue to soar
Even so, BP and Shell look set to be dragged into the row over high petrol prices after a US Senate committee demanded to see tax returns from the 15 largest oil companies as part of an inquiry into industry profits and soaring prices. Also being discussed is a provision to change accounting rules for oil inventories that would force the five biggest - ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, Chevron and ConocoPhillips - to pay $4.8bn more in taxes over the next five years.   more »
View Article  Irish Independent: Exploiting Corrib gas
These slippery statements by Mr Pyle are a clear indication that Shell are committed to nothing except making the maximum profit possible from the Corrib gas field, even if this comes at the price of the safety concerns of Irish citizens.   more »
View Article  Irish Independent: Why Shell should sell off its offshore site
But there are doubts about Shell's competence to resolve the Corrib development: Last week Shell bosses seemed to say that they would move gas processing offshore - before reneging on this soon afterwards.Soft PR regrets for past arrogance clashed with legal tactics - as if one corporate hand doesn't commune with the other. Logically, the Rossport Five were committed for contempt by a no-nonsense High Court judge. In theory this has nothing to do with Shell. In practice the link was clear and damaged Shell's brand. Apologies for past arrogance clashed with moves this week for a permanent injunction that - logically - would commit the Rossport Five aris.   more »

View Article  Irish Independent: Offshore platform at Corrib 'not viable'
Mr Pyle, who returned to Dublin last night without having met with Shell to Sea representatives or the Rossport Five, who spent 94 days in jail last year for their opposition to the controversial pipeline, said he was hoping to meet them at the earliest opportunity.   more »
View Article  Irish Independent: 'I'm prepared to die rather than let this pass by my home,' says defiant protester
THE Rossport Five's Willie Corduff is willing to die rather than allow the Corrib gas pipeline pass by his doorway. And according to his wife, Mary, she'll go to jail too, along with hundreds of supporters, locally, nationally and internationally. "We're a great country for acknowledging our martyrs, so maybe the Government will be raising a plaque to me in another 50 years, because that's what I'm prepared to do - die," said a defiant Mr Corduff from his home in Rossport last night.   more »
View Article  Irish Independent: Oil consumers and producers talk - but will they listen?
Oil raced to an all-time high last week as Iran continued to defy world pressure to halt its nuclear programme, a quarter of Nigeria's output lay idle after rebel attacks, and Iraq's once considerable oil industry was mired in crisis.   more »
View Article  Irish Independent: Ethics watchdog forced to close over libel risk
The centre was established with $4m in funding from billionaire US philanthropist, Chuck Feeney, with a view to probing issues of public interest to make sure they were free from any abuse of power or corruption. It issued two well-received dossiers - on the land and development processes that saw a large hotel rise up opposite Trim Castle, and on the circumstances surrounding the Shell pipeline at Rossport.   more »
View Article  Irish Independent: No further time behind bars for the Rossport Five: But High Court orders the pipeline protesters to pay the costs of Shell contempt action
After the judge directed the men to pay the costs incurred by Shell E and P in bringing the contempt proceedings, Mr Frank Callanan SC, for some of the men, objected and said Shell E and P, which was not represented in court yesterday, had not applied for those costs. Mr Justice Finnegan said he was making the costs order in any event.   more »

View Article  Irish Independent: 1m bill for protecting Rossport pipeline, says McDowell
This again demonstrated "the manner in which Shell are taking the Irish people for a ride" on the issue, he said. "Ironically, the cost of this is likely - under the current terms available to Shell - to vastly outweigh any foreseeable benefit to the Exchequer."   more »

View Article  Irish Independent: OIL - the slickest way to get a gushing profit
Shell and BP alone have produced annual profits of $42bn, and surprisingly, investors reacted with disdain when they announced the record results last week. BP shares fell back because its downstream business (which refers to refining and marketing of oil) is seen as structurally weak. In the case of Shell, investors have not forgiven it for overstating its reserves in 2004.   more »
