The problems of trying to distribute and market LNG in India have not been lost on Royal Dutch/Shell, which has put up a 2.5m tpa terminal at Hazira, also on the Gujarat coast. Shell lost its only customer, Gujarat State Petroleum Corp, in January and has been idle since. It is now in talks with state-owned gas utility GAIL India to hire out its capacity for four years. more »

Described as the world's largest LNG project, Sakhalin II is led by Royal Dutch'Shell and hoping to export its first cargo in mid-2008. Project costs have ballooned to around $20bn with Ian Craig, executive director of the operating company Sakhalin Energy, saying recently: 'I hope we can meet the target, but there's always a risk for further delay.' BG Group was the clear and surprising winner, landing five operatorships and participating in three other licences. Country plans to become the world's largest LNG exporter within four years. Qatargas 3, jointly owned by QP (68.5%), ConocoPhilips (30%) and Mitsui (1.5%), will produce LNG mainly for shipment to the United States. The first LNG cargoes are expected to be lifted from this train in 2009.
