BP was shouting at the top of its voice yesterday about how it is prioritising the environment in this sensitive area inside the Arctic Circle. But environmentalists say the evidence of corrosion simply proves what they have been saying all along: that BP's Alaskan operations have an appalling environmental record that has only been exposed because of brave whistle-blowers inside the company. more »

In fact, the precedents set here could have much wider impacts. A report from the World Wildlife Fund, in November 2005, stated that the "significance [of Sakhalin] should not be underestimated... [Shell] has shown significant interest in the Arctic region", including the Barents, Beaufort and Bering seas where it "would face similar challenges to the Sakhalin project, in terms of ice conditions, marine mammals, indigenous peoples and important fisheries". more »

<From The Independent: "Fewer UK schoolchildren are going into engineering, so Shell and our competitors are fishing in a decreasing pond," says Paul Garnham, Shell's global recruitment coordinator for petroleum engineering. The Independent: “When Royal Dutch Shell went into melt-down two years ago after admitting that its oil reserves estimates had been concocted, the shock to the business, though traumatic at the time, ultimately proved therapeutic. Faced with its biggest corporate scandal in a century, Shell ditched its twin listing, its dual board, and, along with it, the bureaucratic management structure which had earned the company’s South Bank headquarters the title of the Kremlin.” more »

Not only has their environment been destroyed; the people of the Niger Delta have seen none of the profits. Although Shell has extracted more than £30bn from the area, the people who live on the land survive on less than 60 pence a day, with barely any roads, schools or hospitals. Many of the Ogoni people who have spoken out against this scandal have been killed by the Nigerian state. Shortly before he was seized on ludicrous trumped-up charges, Saro-Wiwa said: "This is it. They are going to arrest us all and execute us all for Shell." Although Shell vociferously denies responsibility, their close business partner swiftly hanged Saro-Wiwa, and a major critic of the corporation was conveniently silenced. more »

Royal Dutch Shell's flagship investment in Russia was facing uncertainty last night after the Natural Resources Ministry threatened to scale back the company's stake in a huge liquefied natural gas project to allow the Kremlin greater control. Shell declined to comment but is known to have incurred the Kremlin's wrath due to massive cost overruns on Sakhalin-2, which have prompted the Anglo-Dutch firm to ask the government to allow it to double its investment to $20bn. more »
